Few months ago, I was asked by my director to write an introductory speech about the DOST Secretary. Just what I did when I was asked to write the same about Dr. Biyo, I wrote a poem.

*Words used in the poem are technical because of the secretary’s background—

Our next speaker is a soft spoken person who traces his roots from Tacloban

He claims to be a product of his parents—a simple man and a simple woman

At the age of ten, his family migrated to Manila for important reasons

And there he lived his life including his education.

He is a believer that Filipinos are world class

He firmly upholds that every citizen can contribute to the country a lot

He is an advocate of Science and Technology

He puts his trust that innovations contribute to the betterment of the society

Finishing his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in the University of the Philippines in 1975

His incredible intellectual capacity, it cannot be denied

He emerged as one of the topnotchers in the Mechanical Engineering Board Exam

Two thumbs up and a warm round of applause let us give to this man

In a span of twenty-two years, this guy keeps a list of inventions under his name

Some of them are the transferable steel car parks, robotic car park, and ship-to-shore cranes

Still under his name are the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication)-based water level sensor and rain gauge for flood monitoring and forecasting

The world’s first aero-musical ride, the world’s first motorized zipline are still worth mentioning

The first locally-fabricated equipment for hot steel galvanization is a product of his mind

Equipment for manufacturing of steel poles, gabions, and water-well screens is another thing he designed

The first locally-fabricated drilling equipment with rotary table is one of his inventions

He is really a great man, a pride of our nation

UP College of Engineering has named him one of the 100 outstanding alumni engineers in the century

Outstanding alumni for professional achievement was awarded to him by the UP Tao-Alpha fraternity

Gold Medal Award for creative research by the Filipino Inventor’s Society was given to him in 1989

A real inventor he is—an inspiration to achieve in life

His passion to serve made him decide to accept a post in the government

President Aquino appointed him a secretary of his cabinet

Ladies and gentlemen, it is with pride and honor that I present

Our very own DOST secretary, Engr. Mario G. Montejo a man who was born to invent.

A warm round of applause for him.

* I read this in his (Secretary Montejo)  presence when he visited Clark for the MOA signing between Clark Development Corporation (CDC) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Life is never about proving to people that you are a good person. Sometimes, the BAD THINGS matter.

For in your dark side, you see people who are ready to light the road with you. It is not how many your friends are, or how people roam around you, but it’s how few of them accept your being you.

For in your nothingness, people TRUE to you find reasons to Love you still.

*Appreciation is given to those people who accept me as being me.

*For people who have an awareness of my ‘dark secrets’— (Do I have?:)  )— I sincerely offer my  warmest gratitude for still keeping and maintaining that ‘respect’ and ‘love’ even though you are fully aware that I am a no-unblemished creation–ahuh—

In the midst of the pitter-patter of the rain, I find myself an inspiration (I do not know if it is really an inspiration) to scribble my nearly-crying feelings (if I may call it) of wanting-to-go-home-but-to-no-avail situation.

I recall myself having been home four (4) months ago (that was during the Holy Week). It may sound exaggerated (OA for this matter), but four months (in my thought) is too long to be away from home (How much more for those who have been years away— Well, I just can speak for myself). The feeling of so-near-yet-so-far has been attacking my system since some days ago.  I call it such because home is just two long land transportation  rides away from home (which would consume 10 hours (for one way) of my life– more than 700 km of land travel via Mac Arthur and Halsema Highways).

At times, I just have to browse over family pictures or play on some family videos to entertain myself (actually not to entertain myself—but to let my lachrymal glands function well). My cousin, Dineliza, would even let her lachrymal glands function too as we try to exchange ‘nostalgic’ words through text or through Facebook.

Since this morning, I have been in a ‘missing-home-a-lot’, for I know that I missed a family gathering today. I am a person who wants to be physically present in all family gathering and activities. I find self-fulfillment whenever I find time to mingle with some members of my big family. Few days ago, I received an even invitation my sister. The event invitation states that there would be a post birthday celebration of one of my aunts on August 5. Receiving this invitation, I paused for a while to let my neurons work– for I need to decide whether I have to go home or not at all. Finally, I convinced myself that I can manage not to go home this time.

Just this morning, I received a text message from my aunt which reads ‘Gud mrning lunch tko patpatowan ta bon ong kmi ha ha’. Ahuh, yes, this message (for some reasons) made me weak, for I know what comes next are pictures from home just to press my nerves of envy. As expected, few hours after lunch, my facebook notification button states that my cousin tagged me in a post. I know, I know so well that those are painted words that would enliven my nerves of envy and my nerves of nostalgia. And they did! These pictures performed their roles well— They served their purposes—

This time, I am still here–gathering my nerves of envy to become whole again, for I know that a lot is yet to come.

I just missed family gatherings— I miss home– NOSTALGIC!
